Things to do in New York City

JumpLife – TriBeCa – 404 Broadway

By Melissa Limberg

So, you want to work out…. but you don’t wanna be bored, and you kinda wanna do something new? Oh, well, I think I have an idea. Why don’t you go to a trampoline gym? Seriously, they’re out there. They’re pretty cool. You might just love it..

I was trolling the pages of Groupon for any awesome fitness deals one day, and I clicked on “JumpLife.” This was a deal for three trampoline fitness classes. Like… um, hello, that sounds SO fun, right? I headed down to TriBeCa and found the gym on a second floor walk up. The gym is set up with rows of tiny one-person trampolines. Eeeeeek! The child in me was excited. I had signed up for a “Jump Dance” class – they offer both Jump Gym and Jump Dance. Jump Gym incorporates free weights and Jump Dance is more cardio working on the lower body.

Everyone claimed their own trampoline and the lights were turned off and disco lights were turned on. Dance music was blaring, and the instructor got everyone going. She showed all of us new kids how to do basic steps and we all practiced, not so bad. For 45 minutes we jumped in ways I’ve never thought to jump on a trampoline – and it was a great cardiovascular workout. My lower body was definitely targeted. I won’t lie, it’s kind of hard at first to get in the groove of jumping with the rhythm and trying to control your speed as you manage the bounces… but that’s the allure, no?

What I liked the most about Jump Life is that it’s a fresh idea that feels novel. The staff was completely attentive, and it was a small class. You can tell this is a somewhat new gym, but that’s part of the charm. The amenities aren’t the most awesome (like cubby holes instead of lockable compartments…) but even despite their drawbacks, this is worth trying out. The fitness lover in me is telling you all to try something new and challenge your comfort zone because varying your workouts is what will really give you excellent results. It’s no SoulCycle, but that’s not what they’re going for anyway. It’s a small, new gym that needs a great group of core followers!

Try it once, and maybe you’ll be hooked! With all the NYSC and Equinox fees for completely standard and boring equipment it’ll be fun to add some spice to your routine at Jump Life.
