We all recognize some of the historical or interesting places in the cities where we live. And we all fall into the pattern of being comfortable excusing ourselves as being too busy to go or rationalizing we will visit another day. Those days turn into months which turn into years. I am guilty of this and the Morgan Library is a prime example. It’s right on Madison Avenue and I have literally passed it 1,000 times. And finally, one rainy Friday evening, I forced myself to walk through the doors and couldn’t have been happier.
Opulence, and just downright cool. Located at 225 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10016 (between 36th and 37th Streets on the east side of Manhattan.) This historic home, library and museum, along with sitting areas and a restaurant should be on your list of places to visit in the city. The $20 entry fee for adults is a little steep but they have free hours on Tuesday afternoon, Friday evening and Sunday late afternoon, so no excuses.
NYC Public Library (Main Branch)
Opened in 1911, this massive and gorgeous space is a research library, offers study areas, art exhibits, people watching and so much more. Located at 476 5th Ave (on 42nd Street) this branch of the NYC public library system is attached to Bryant Park so once you are finished, grab a coffee and spend some time outside. Insider tip: Bryant Park offers outdoor movies on a large screen in the summers and the perimeter of the park has petanque (French version of bocce ball,) ping pong tables, games, putting green, reading area and lots of food.
This is hidden but accessible New York. A library dedicated to all things dog, located on the 4th floor of 261 Madison Avenue (between 38th and 39th Street.) The library is part of the American Kennel Club and has a full time librarian/archivist who is happy to provide all the information one could hope for in a speciality library such as this. The space is open to the public so just give them a call ahead of time.
Full Access Recommended – All of these locations are within a short walk of each other. Take 3 hours on an afternoon and knock them all out in one go for a very satisfying NYC experience.
