I visit Randall’s Island many weekends during the year to take advantage of the outdoor space and available activities. The island is located in the East River between the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan. Below are 10 great activities for you to try on the weekend or after work.
The John McEnroe Tennis Academy was established in 2010 and is located on Randall’s Island. Be sure to check out this site for classes and schedules.
Paved roads and paths that take a rider around the perimeter of Randall’s Island. Get in a few laps and then stop off at one of the local concession stands for a little after workout treat. If you are looking for some other bike rides around the city, check out these 2 in Brooklyn along the water.
Golf Driving Range
Look out over the city and take a swing with your favorite club at this NYC driving range.
Track and Field
Icahn Stadium opened in 2005 and offers a full 400 meter all weather track. Watch athletes complete or look on the stadium’s website for open track nights to be able to use the facilities.
Check out the annual Frieze show for contemporary and modern art.
Electric Zoo, Governors Ball and a number of other concerts and music festivals are held on Randall’s Island.
Walk around the island and you will see people with large surf rods fishing in the fast moving East River. Bring your New York state fishing license before you go.
The New York City Riding Academy is on Randall’s Island and has a great view of the East River and Manhattan skyline as you practice riding.
Sign up for a NYC sports league, participate in a pick-up game or just watch any of the number of organized soccer games held on Randall’s Island.
Baseball and Softball
Almost all of the fields have views of Manhattan, Queens and the East River. What is better than a weekend afternoon playing a game of softball or baseball and taking in the sights and sounds of NYC all around you?
