The Baylander (IX-514), long since retired from naval service has found it’s way up the Hudson and is docked at the West Harlem Piers off 125th street.  

The ship has undergone various conversions and modifications and at one time was used as a helicopter landing pad to help train military pilots.

Now the Baylander is ready for public visitors.  You can make your way over to the pier on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and walk right on board.  The ship is open for exploration and the crew member I met, Scott, was so well informed and knowledgeable about both the ship and New York, it is worth the trip just to speak with him.  

In addition to hosting visitors, the Baylander is used for some private functions and is planning to hold a family and kids day at the end of February with local firefighters, police officers and conduct a live scuba diving demonstration in the Hudson River.

Long term, the ship will start to have drinks and food (similar to the Frying Pan downtown) and I am looking forward to this being a long term member of the uptown community.

While you are in the area also consider:

1. Biking or running along the Hudson River Greenway up to either the George Washington Bridge and Little Red Lighthouse or all the way to the top of Manhattan
2. Any number of restaurants including a personal favorite, Dinosaur BBQ.  Be sure to get the fried green tomatoes and a pulled pork sandwich
3. Fairway Grocery Store if you live in the area and are looking for quality ingredients at a good price
