Mighty Quinn’s BBQ in the East Village

Mighty Quinn Spare RibsIf a restaurant’s name is any indicator of its culinary prowess, than Mighty Quinn’s should be one stellar BBQ joint.  And after my meal there last night, I can say with confidence this place delivered.

Located on 6th St. and 2nd Ave, Mighty Quinn’s serves up a bare bones (so to speak) menu consisting of brisket, pulled pork, ribs, a few sides and a choice selection of craft beer.  I like restaurants that focus on a few items and make those things really, really well.  Don’t get me wrong, I also enjoy diners with 15 page menus but this is a BBQ place and a one page menu was just right.

I first heard about this restaurant from a friend.  After he brought it up in 5 subsequent conversations, I figured it was time to make the trip.  So I called up a few friends and we headed down to the East Village.  I was warned the place could get packed but with the cold weather and being the start of the week, everything went smoothly.  We grabbed some seats and then headed over to the meat counter to select our food.  The server adeptly sliced the brisket or hand pulled the pork for our sandwiches.  He then added a finishing pinch of salt which was a nice touch.

My pulled pork sandwich with side of coleslaw, pickles and peppers came to $8.  I added a side of baked beans with burnt ends (awesome) for an extra $3.  I then added a rack of ribs for good measure (but it’s cool because I was with people and we split them.)

Mighty Quinn’s is BBQ done right; slow cooked and simple.  The next time you are in the city, add them to your restaurant list.
