We have been inundated with books, films and TV shows on the subject of the Mafia over the years. Wives, girlfriends and daughters have taken to the pen to expose their experiences. Yet many of them have either “sugar-coated” their stories or they really had no knowledge of “the life.”

One of the earliest books that delved deep into the life was “Mafia Marriage” by Rosalie Bonanno, who was married to Salvatore Vincent “Bill” Bonanno, the son of Cosa Nostra boss Joseph Bonanno.

I went through the Full Access NYC instagram feed and pulled 32 of our favorite photos from 2015. We started the year with some real cold and snow. Spring and Summer allowed us to get in some community gardening, fishing in Central Park and nice bike rides along the Hudson River. Fall brought vibrant colors and neighborhood exploratory walks. Winter came again but has been mild and allowed us to get in some additional outdoor activities before our annual 2 month hibernation for the start of 2016.

The sounds of New York drift up from the street through the open window. At 7pm, that means rush hour noises, the sounds of cars and trucks rushing by, the sounds of horns honking when their movement stalls.

Inside the dance studio, the sounds and movements come from a different island.

Comic Con Invades Queens With A Splash

We have heard of NY Comic Con, Eternal Con, NJ Comic Con and now we have Winter Con. The geeks are coming out in force. The popularity of comic, digital media and collectibles have become more prevalent in the past few years. Currently almost every season there is a new Comic Con. The largest and most popular is the NY Comic Con that is during October, Eternal Con which is building steam is in the summer and the NJ Con is in November and Winter Con wraps it up in December.

Why is soul food great? Because it is made with love. It is the same reason your mom’s chicken soup cures your cold and why your Grandmother’s meatballs are without comparison. The thought and care that goes into creating these dishes is what make them special. And this care can be seen in products that are developed and sold throughout the city.

Look beyond Wall Street and Midtown’s financial firms, Madison Avenue ad agencies and Silicon Alley in the FlatIron District. Instead look around at the thousands of individuals and smaller companies who make our bread, artisanal pickles, jewelry, hats and any other number of items we give as gifts or use in our daily lives.

There are all manner of interesting professions and niche industries in the city and I was fortunate to be able to speak with Jerry Middleton owner and operator of Wood Essentials, a company that specializes in making wood medicine cabinets.

New Museum Photography Tour

When friends visit and have never been to a museum in the city, I take them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met.) It is huge and has a collection of artwork that spans thousands of years and covers the entire globe. Simple as that.

However, not all New York museums focus on broad collections. Some represent niche areas of the art world and have a specific style of artwork or region of the world. The New Museum is just that; a contemporary art museum located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Another weekend and another opportunity to escape the city for a few hours. If you don’t have a car (which is most of us) Metro North makes these trips very accessible.

If you look at a Google Map of the Hudson River there are a lot of towns and historic points of interest you should make the time to visit.

Superheros in Gotham

Everyone comes to New York to make it, even superheroes. Batman, Superman, Captain America, Spider-man, and Iron Man all have lived, worked, captured villains, and rescued victims here. The Superheroes in Gotham exhibit at the New York Historical Society traces these masked heroes from the pages of comic books to radio, television, film, and Broadway.

Lady Long Long: Multi-talented Asian Performer Taking The US By Storm

She can sing, dance, act, paint and even write. What else can China native Lady Long Long do? Coming from an artistic family Lady Long Long was raised to appreciate and master the arts. At first she needed to travel to Europe and learn proper English as many Chinese families do. She spent time in England, France, Germany and Holland. She had a culture shock in Europe. Yet she made the best of it.
